We are moving to the Lake Mary area this summer. We have two children - one that will be starting high school next school year and the other one will be starting high school the year after that so we are basing where we purchase a home based on the high school. Due to work reasons is why we are limiting it to the Lake Mary, Longwood, Winter Springs, and Altamonte Springs area and have narrowed down the high school choices to Lake Mary, Lake Brantley, and Winter Springs based on research and feedback received so far. Our daughter is interested in the arts and theater and our son excels at math, history, and is interested in JROTC. Of these three, which would you suggest?

All 3 of these schools are great but I would consider Lake Brantley and Lake Mary to be a tier above Winter Springs simply for their longer histories and traditions. Now I'm a little biased by Lake Brantley is great school with great athletics, academics and performing arts. No matter what any grading system says Lake Brantley has always been highly regarded as one of the top public high schools in Central FL. I attended yeaaaarrrsss ago and even than we had more AP classes than you could fill your schedule with. It's a school where many teachers have been there teaching for decades. Again, I'm biased.....GO BRANTLEY! PATRIOT PRIDE!

I went to Lake Brantley, and when we moved back here, I knew I wanted the kids to go there, too. Of course, it's changed so much since I went there, but all the changes are great!

Of the schools you mentioned Lake Brantley is probably the strongest all round for the areas of drama, math and ROTC. If interests develop towards engineering Lyman can pick up where Brantley leaves off. Lyman is the magnet school focused on engineering.

From a home perspective there will be many options in all price ranges , from 150,000 to 5.5M. Altamonte, Longwood and even Apopka have areas that attend Lake Brantley. Longwood will be the most convenient to Lake Mary.

Winter Springs HS isn't rated as high (B) as the other 2 so it would be the bottom of my list. I would far opt for Winter Park High(A) above Winter Springs as it is the second highest rated school in the area. (second to Oviedo). The best performing arts school is Dr. Phillips(A) but that isn't close to Lake Mary. Lake Mary is a B rated school so I'd opt for Brantley which is an A rated school, as is Crooms(A) - the IT magnet school in the Brantley District.

Hope this helps.

I have a nephew who dropped out of the Lake Brantley AFJROTC citing the immaturity of the leadership and the members after being there for a bit over a year. He's doing very well in his "A" school in the AF right now. Personally, I am sure the program is FINE for what it is, but just thought you should know that it's not perfect. I intend to have my kids graduate LB, ROTC or not.

Without knowing your budget I would suggest Colonial Grand -Lake Mary which is literally across the street from the Deloitte complex. It's also adjacent to a Starbucks and a nice breakfast/lunch cafe (Another Broken Egg) as well as a beautiful park and walking/bike trails right at your door practically. It's also walking distance to a Publix grocery store, Walgreen's and dozens of restaurants/bars around the Colonial Town Center complex.
