We are first time home owners who want to sell our current home to move into a home closer to work. What is the best way to go about this without getting majorly screwed? Ideally, we want to have the new house built and would like to have the money from the current house to add to or use as the down payment. Any advice from people who have been through this would be appreciated. Thanks.

This question depends on a lot of variables that you did not mention in your post. Such as is your first home paid for if not you will have to wait to sell first or have enough credit and income to cover both. If these were normal times it would be a simple matter you could make an offer on a new house based on your ability to sell your house within a given time period. The trouble with this now is the condition of the real estate market you may not be able to get a fair price for your currant home within a reasonable time period. My wife and I did this about 12 years ago and it worked out fine but now I would think twice.
