Florida, and Orlando in particular, offer a lot more than theme parks.

I too would claim that everything else is second best compared to the wide variety of options one has when visiting Florida.

I live in FL. I have visited other states and cities while residing here. None of them have offered the variety of choices that Florida does. That is why MOST of our vacation time is spent in Florida and not elsewhere.

Once you've seen the Grand Canyon, you've seen it. Once you've toured London, you've seen it. Shuffling around a big city looking at buildings and being in certain areas once is enough for me. However, in Florida it is quite easy and enjoyable to visit areas more than once, twice, or more.

Some of us marvel at the Grand Canyon or the history you find in London.

Some people enjoy standing in long lines.

There is no logic. It's just a distaste for FL. Some will only downplay a good thing in an attempt to make their weak point stronger.

JFK is a international hub. Most of the people who touch down at JFK never leave the airport. They just go to another gate, another terminal and fly back out again. People who visit OIA get off the plane, rent a car, catch a bus, get a pick up from a hotel shuttle, friends, family. The stay and visit.

I guess to each their own. I'd rather be in Europe soaking up some history and walking through some of the oldest architecture on Earth, rather than being elbow to elbow with hot sweaty tourists. If I want nice beaches that are uncrowded I'll fly down to the Carribean. See I've lived here all my life, all over central Florida, when I want a vacation I want to get out of state and out and about. So no Florida is not the end all be all vacation spot...for me. The theme parks wore off when I was about 15 years old.

Who would come to Orlando if there were no theme parks ? Family relatives and folks passing through on I-4. Think Orlando, circa 1965-1970, a sleepy little citrus-based city of 100,000 residents or so. Most of the Orlando natives I know tell me what a better place Orlando was back before the theme parks.

Most visitors to Florida would head for the beaches as my family did when there were no theme parks.

This is true, of course. Nobody really even knows downtown Orlando exists. People that prefer the way it was like small towns. I prefer downtowns with walkable amenities. Florida has extremely slim pickings for that if you want to live in this state, and Orlando offers one of the best and possibly the best downtown depending on your taste.
