I am interested in a room rental for the winter months. I have read on these message boards that the crime in the Orlando area is horrendous. I used to live there about fifteen years ago (lived in Orlando off the trail, Altamonte Springs and Deltona), When I saw the crime increasing back then I moved back to the NY suburbs.

I would like to spend the winter months in Florida for health reasons and wanted to know which areas around Orlando have less of a crime problem. I am flexible and the area can be on the East Coast from Ormond Beach to Brevard County, Lake County, Seminole County (Lake Mary, Longwood), etc. I have several friends in Orlando so I would like to be closeby, but not too close. I hesitate to ask their opinion because I don't want to tell them I don't want to stay in Orlando because there is too much crime where they live.

I don't know which areas stayed relatively safe over the years I have been away, and don't trust the demographics figures, so before I start my room search, I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Don't know what you can afford?

The new developments (condos/townhouses) downtown Orlando near lake Eola are pretty safe.......Basically most of the stuff downtown is safe on the side where Lake Eola is.

Doctor Phillips is really safe. When i say safe i mean safe feeling......of coarse random crime could happen anywhere but i really havent heard of it in Doctor Phillips at all.

Windemere is safe too

Altamonte by the mall is pretty safe and longwood, Winter Springs, Lake Mary, Most of Winter Park (except behind the movie theatre in that little area), and Waterford Lakes is pretty safe too

Thanks for your advice, it's good to know that the areas you mentioned are still safe, I spent a lot of time in Dr. Phillips, my two friends had townhouses there, I used to live on the corner of 436 and I-4 in Altamonte in an apartment waiting for my house to be built in Deltona. Longwood is my favorite area, I like the townhouses on the golf course.

There always seems to be a shortage of winter rentals, that's why I am starting early, and it''s probably not so early now. I could go up to $1,000 a month, so I was thinking of a roommate situation from Feb. - Apr. in a nice area.

A little north of Ormond Beach is Flagler Beach--- out of the rat race, peaceful and safe.

The problem with Orlando is you don't have to wander far from a safe area to get to an "unsafe" area. Anywhere there is a major highway it is a conduit for crime. There is crime EVERYWHERE in Orlando, even in nice places like Oviedo- a few months back a gang slashed the tires of every car parked on our street. Lots of vehicles were affected. You can see the crime brewing up though, you go into a store and it isn't uncommon to find things that are broken or torn up, even in nice neighborhoods. In other parts of the country you only see that in the ghetto. Thanks to easy credit the ghetto elements, with no self-respect much less respect for others, have infiltrated most of the Orlando neighborhoods.

I suppose though if you don't go out at night and watch your back, alot of places in Orlando are relatively safe though.

Having worked in the Central Florida law enforcement community for 8 years, I can provide some good insight for you Jenna.

In my opinion, the nicest overall communities in the Greater Orlando area are in the Lake Mary – Heathrow area. However, I don’t think too many winter time renters are here. These are up-scale bedroom communities for Orlando with very little crime.

If you would like to live on the coast I would suggest Ormond Beach, Ponce Inlet, or Port Orange. These are nice beach communities with little crime and you could drive to downtown Orlando in little over an hour. These cities are popular amongst winter time renters.

Good Luck!!
