Be careful with it though you guys. It is pretty to look at, yes. But this is something to watch for before using/getting to close to it (from Jacksonville.com)

"Spanish moss is home and nesting material to birds, snakes, bats and many insects and spiders. It is most famous as home to chiggers, or red bugs. To those unfamiliar with these tiny creatures, the larvae insert their mouthpieces into the skin and cause unbelievable itching for a week or so."

On my drives from Atlanta to Orlando-Jacksonville you see it before you pass I10 while on I75. Not sure if it grows in south Alabama or Mississippi. You see that gray moss quite a bit in Florida.

On the East Coast, it mainly starts in Virginia Beach. However, you're hearing more and more about people growing it as far north as Baltimore. I guess with temperatures trending upwards, it will be able to thrive in more coastal areas along the East Coast.

When we go to the beach from our home in North Alabama, the first place I see it is just barely north of Montgomery.

Plenty of it here in Columbus,Ga,(100 miles south of Atlanta) mainly around the river and lakes. But I have seen it growing
with no water source around.

I was disappointed there wasn't a palm tree in our yard when we moved to FL and had instead a live oak with Spanish moss. Now I wouldn't trade a native tree for anything else; love the shade and the moss.

In the western part of the South, I’ve seen it as far north as Miller County, Arkansas. It’s locally common just south of there in North Louisiana and Northeast Texas. It doesn’t really get widespread until within about 100 miles of the Gulf. If you drape or tie some to your trees, it will live and grow well far from its native range, but birds usually carry it off for nesting material at a rate faster than it can replenish itself.

I have seen it in the Great Dismal Swamp on the Virginia side growing naturally. I have seen some a bit farther inland that people put in their trees. In Virginia (the native populations) it is scattered randomly around the forest or swamp.
