Hmm, I actually think you would rather like Tampa...there are actually more natives there and it's a lot more friendly/sturdy than Orlando. Here, maybe not so much!

the city limits of tampa are an absolute crime ridden dump besides some of south tampa and davis/harbour islands....the suburbs of tampa can be very nice and kinda country/southern feeling.....orlando sounds like broward county from reading this thread.

Greensboro is trashier than Orlando, just in a different way. We had it narrowed down to Greensboro, Atlanta, or Fort Lauderdale (I know, I know...) from Orlando and...yeah.
Greensboro trashier than Orlando? Whuuu? I've never been there, but that's hard to imagine! Do you mean trashier like in a "NASCAR's on woman, don't make me beat you with my fishin' pole" way? LOL. In all seriousness, I'm really interested in your feedback.

It'll probably be Charlotte for us - or at least a small town within 30 miles.

I see your point. But they have really been cleaning it up over the last 4 years. I lived in Wesley Chapel (20 miles North of Tampa) and it does not even compare to Orlando, Maitland, Lake Mary, etc. I liked it much better.

But, a guy's gotta go where his company sends him!

Well, in many parts, yes . It's poorer, seemingly less educated (despite the university presence), and just all around dirtier than Orlando. For better or worse, it's a REAL southern city, as well as blue-collar Winston-Salem and High Point. Try Raleigh/Cary if you are looking for a prosperous, clean area with educated people. Charlotte is fine, and the people are nicer up that way, but in many ways its "Orlandoish" in the way of sprawl, traffic and the crime rate is not much of an improvement (heck, Morgan Quitno only ranks it a step safer than Dade County). Overall I think the only area that's really offering what people say it is would be the Triangle area (Raleigh). The Triangle is the Toyota Camry of metropolitan areas...it does everything right, has good manners, and all for reasonable prices, but it is oh so boring...the biggest problem I could see in Raleigh is that illegal immigration seemed to be more common than I would like. All and all though when I travel there I have met some well educated people, didn't sit in any traffic, people knew how to drive, didn't really encounter any "Bad" neighborhoods, and a generally pleasant looking environment.
