I'm trying to help my parents relocate and am looking for good senior housing that is near a reputable hospital in the area. They can live on their own and are in fairly good health, but my mom will need to go to the hospital quite a bit for an illness that she has.

So, I'm looking for a good "55 or better" community that is near a fairly good hospital system. I'm also trying to make sure that they are in a safe neighborhood. Anyone have suggestions?

There aren't any 55+ communities I'm aware of in the immediate Orlando area, as most are on the outskirts further out of town. I'd recommend Victoria Gardens in DeLand, which is a nice little college town (Stetson University) about halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach. It's a really nice/safe gated community with fairly easy access to downtown DeLand and Florida Hospital Deland which is part of the largest health system in the area and quite well respected.

Look at Kings Ridge in Clermont, you'll be two miles from South Lake Hospital, part of Orlando Health which runs ORMC, the only Level 1 trauma center in the area. It's about 35 minutes from Kings Ridge to downtown Orlando.

Also with Kings Ridge you can access Publix, a liquor store, hearing aid place, dentist, Mexican restaurant, Subway, Mc Donalds, three banks, two hair salons, a dollar store, and a number of other shops and services by golf cart.

Kings Ridge is a safe, friendly gated community in the rolling hills of Clermont. It offers a ton of onsite amenities including indoor and outdoor pools, large clubhouse with a variety of activities, tennis, golf, and more.

You should look for doctors that will take Medicare and have several, a dozen or so, ready to go in case the one you pick decides not to take Medicare at some point in the future.

I'm going to ask a question and you don't have to answer...but does your mom want to move to a place away from friends and family when she has a serious enough illness that she needs to live close to a hospital?

My reason for asking....I have been here for over 30 years and have seen many very lonely sad men and women who retired to Florida. They leave everything they know, their children and grandchildren, their friends, their church, their doctors, and even just the feeling of home and knowing where everything is etc,. because they think coming to Florida is the way to retire. Sometimes they can't adjust and one of them dies within 6 months leaving the other here alone. Often they would come into my friend's store when I was helping her out and buy an inexpensive item and talk to the clerks. Then the next day return it and talk to the cashiers. It was like the people in the store were the only people they had to talk to so they found reasons to come in to talk .

My point...make sure it is what she really wants to do not what she thinks is the right thing to do for you or for your dad or because retiring to Florida is what we do when we get old. .

If your parents are in need of ANY kind of specialized care, proximity to South Lake should NOT dictate your housing options.
