I've never thought about it like that as I've said it to people who I know are local. Staff at stores, offices, restaurants, etc. For instance in casual conversation with the waiter, cashier, receptionists, etc, I'll ask them "where do you stay?" Than I'll usually recommend some restaurant in that area or some random experience I had in that area. Is that unusual of me or am I just a little too friendly and forward?

I think it's presumptuous of you to make recommendations to people who live in an area, especially if you don't live there. It's one thing to say, "Oh, I love XYZ Restaurant in the ABC Plaza there" but another to assume they don't know their own neighborhood. Just my opinion.

Well that's what I meant. I usually say something very similar to what you said, or "have you tried X, I love that place." I wouldn't be crass enough to tell them "you should _____ try" or something along those lines. I'm just trying to make small talk.

Gotcha.

I still think "Where do you stay" is weird and makes it sound like they are transient. I stay in hotels, I live in my home.

I tend to ask "What part of the Orlando area do you live in" That way they can answer as vaguely or specifically as they'd like to.

It's funny because growing up in FL people used to say "where you from?" meaning what part of the local area are you from. Than when people started really moving here you couldn't really ask that anymore because everyone would say, NY, Boston, Minnesota, Chicago, etc.

Exactly, or "stay on a couch at my cousin's house this week"....To me it originates from the same camp that uses the phrase "Where you at?".

Yea, what Kyle said.

When I lived in the Carolinas, "Where do you stay?" was used frequently. I never heard it anywhere up north or in FL.

I've been here for 30 years and have never heard that phrase.

Are we grasping at straws for something negative?
