Any suggestions for good car repair places in the general vicinity of John Young Pkwy and Sand Lake, for general issues (tires, oil change, whatever) and also a specific place for transmissions? My five year old Honda Civic is showing signs of transmission problems. When shifting from first to second in slow, or stop and go traffic, it "clunks" pretty hard--so far my approach has been to avoid letting it shift). Drives fine otherwise. I can go to the dealer, but am afraid they will charge an unreasonable amount. thanks

That might not be the transmission. It could be the differential, a motor mount issue, or even a torsion bar problem. I would also rule out a u-joint problem. It could be too much free play in the drive line or a loose companion flange nut.

I would not let them talk you into a transmission overhaul or replacement without first verifying that it's not something much less expensive to repair.
