I don't live in Orlando I live in southern fla but I've never spoken a word of Spanish and always found a job. Of course there are plenty of jbs that don't require Spanish. Those jobs are usually translator. I never see jobs hat require Spanish/English fluently. That is a false misconception of Florid.

No it isn't. You are in Naples. Try finding work in Mijami.

You don't need to know Spanish to get a healthcare job in Orlando.

I don't need to, I have a degree in the culinary/hospitality industry. Notorious for having a lot of Spanish workers. Still never needed it. The ones that did work there were nice enough however to start teaching me culinary terms in Spanish to see if I'd catch on. I by the time I left I could order most of my daily food prep on Spanish.. I found it lots of fun, and interesting when I got things mixed up and would get a bag of potato chips for bakery instead of say powered milk. It's not a negative thing to be surrounded by Spanish speaking people, it's a learning one.

Cool. I dont understand why English speaking people are so uptight about being bi-lingual. In Europe and other parts of the world bi-lingual is the norm. Some are even tri-lingual. Didnt anyone study a foreign language in school? I wish I had actually learned Spanish while in school. Ive often thought about getting Rosetta Stone's program to do it.

Keep up the good work SB!!!

Spring Hillian -- The Rosetta Stone programs are good but very slow. You spend about four hours on food and drink...not how to order but just what it means to say 'I want a drink'. The program won't let you move on until you've done countless rounds of 'what is the word for drink in Spanish'. I got bored quickly.

You'd be better off taking a class from a native speaker.

Emm. Thanks for the input. A classroom setting where you can use what is being taught in the class sounds better than going solo.

I don't think the Enlish speaking people of south Florida are any more uptight about being bi-lingual than the Spanish speaking people of south Florida. The problem is on both ends.

About 15 years ago I took Spanish at the local university. I don't remember any of it because I never was around people that spoke it! If you don't use it, you lose it.
