There is a RIFT between so called Nuyoricans and those that are arriving from Puerto Rico to Florida.

Generally speaking, since the 70s Nuyoricans have had a bad rap in Puerto Rico. Many were sent to the island because of uncontrollable behavior in NYC schools. “ Send then down to Tío Juan , he’ll fix them” Many thought.

On the average most NYC Ricans are not educated, dropped out of school, got their mami in the Bronx pregnant, signed them on to welfare, and worked on and off jobs of no importance. This behavior was described fully in an issue of THE ECONOMIST. Many got involved in drug pushing in order to go beyond the $7.50 an hour minimum.

The ones who stayed in school went to trade schools, certainly not a way to get ahead in a rabid capitalistic society like the US.

In order to escape the mess they were in, many opted to go to Florida, and here is where the clash occurs.

Many Ricans from the island who moved to Florida in the late 90s had some education and middle class aspirations. Many were shocked when those from NY accused them of wanting to be White. Many nuyoricans accused new arrivals from the island of being snotty, looking down on them and refusing to look at themselves as black.

Although many Ricans from the island loved blasting regatón, they consider those from NY to go way beyond the pale.

Overall, the only thing in common that those from Orlando have with Nuyoricans is that they all love to dance and eat rice and beans.

I wouldn't be so smug and all-knowing. Nearly all multi-generational PR folk have Taino native American blood (originally central-east Asian migrant across Bering land bridge during waning stages of the last ice age from Siberia into Alaska and migrating all the way to Tierra del Fuego Argentina/Chile). All these folks have those Asiatic features whether Mayan or Taino. Only difference is % indigenous native - in Mexico the bulk of the population are mestizos with over 50% indigenous blood where in Puerto Rico most are primarily European and/or black with 10-20% indigenous blood. However, there are a minority of folks of Puerto Rican descent that are 30-even rarely 40%. I saw an interview of a lady whose appearance was straight Mexican or central American that was one of the top finishers in the NY Marathon who was Puerto Rican who gave a shot out to her strong Taino blood and claimed 40% from a DNA test she had taken. Also there are Mexicans I met in PR who came and opened restaurants (Ricans love Mexican food!) or Mexican-Americans I've met who served in the armed forces based here and decided to stay. Probably some 3rd and 4rth gene Mexi-Ricans, too.

Anyway, it's not at all that rare to see people in PR, especially in the central mountainous spine who are short of stature, have broad faces, and Asiatic eyes. One of the most amazing things about PR families is the evidence of gene expression and gene non-expression. In the same family, there will be individuals who, based on outward appearance, would be labelled black in the United States, individuals who would be labelled white, those who would be labelled mestizo - yet all have the same "trigenyo" (sp) gene pool of all the races of man!

Maybe that's true for the Dominicans but very few Mexicans come to Puerto Rico. There are just as many Chinese in Puerto Rico as Mexicans in Puerto Rico.

Lmao I'm Mayan and there's like no Mayans from southern Mexico or Guatemala that move to Puerto Rico because they're interested in going to the USA or to richer parts of Mexico

There are many Mexicans in the Greater San Juan area, but I doubt they make up more than 1-2% of the population. Much greater is the Dominican presence.

In the Orlando area most Puerto Ricans are, well, PR's. Many are from the NYC metro area (most of these are descendants of PR) and many are from the island. The last ones have always had a bigger share in Orlando than in NYC (Buenaventura Lakes was even advertised in PR), but many especially arrived in the last few years after Hurricane Maria. Most settled in the southern part of Orlando with Kissimmee being the center of that migration.

While you are right from a historical perspective, mass occupation of Florida did not take place until it was firmly in the possession of the US, with the Spanish influence long gone, and with English as the predominant language. There is not some long tradition of speaking Spanish in Florida that is now being renewed with the arrival of Spanish speaking immigrants. I see this same narrative applied to California, a state upon which the Spanish had an even more tenuous grip.
