My husband inherited a lot in a subdivision in Polk County about 30 years ago. He has no interest in this lot, no intention of moving there and we don't want it. We have paid the property taxes (minimal) and the HOA fees for the last 30 years. THis last year when several votes failed to raise the fees the current board consulted attorneys who said they could raise the fees without a vote. Consequently the board raised the yearly fees from $65 to $300 per year. We can't afford it and have no idea how to get rid of this albatross. We have listed it with a realtor to no avail. i will give it away. If we just don't pay the taxes can we hope the county just takes it back? Thanks for any advice.

The County won't take it back, however it is possible that they will sell a tax certificate and then auction it off after two years of nonpayment of property taxes. Penalties and interest costs will be involved. You should consult with a Polk County RE attorney for the best feedback to your situation.

Why not donate it. Habitat for Humanity? A church?
