DH is considering a job in Maitland near I-4 & 414 and I work from home. We have lived in Northern Virginia where it can take 45 minutes to go 5 or 6 miles, so we know how bad traffic can be. I have heard great things about DP and eastern parts of Windermere, but I'm not sure if the commute is worth it. We have a 2yo, so schools are a consideration in the future. What are the commute times from Dr Phillips to Maitland during rush hour and non-rush hour?

Prepare for NOVA commute times when I-4 construction widening projects begin this Fall and I sure as heck wouldn't find it "worth it" when there are schools as good (if not better) to the north in Lake Mary, Heathrow or Longwood/Wekiva Springs that allow for 30 minutes or less to Maitland.

20 minutes at 630 AM with no traffic (and no freak accidents). 30-40 mins weekday (non-friday) typical afternoon.

45 mins-1 hour on a bad friday afternoon back to DP from Maitland (possibly longer with a bad accident).

It's variable. I've done DP to Altamonte quite a bit so I am not making these numbers up. What about living in winter park? That would get you great schools and a closer location to Maitland.

I have to agree. Even without the construction, the commute from Dr. Phillips to Maitland is going to get old really quickly. Look north. I'd start in Winter Park and Maitland, actually. If you can afford to live in Dr. Phillips, you can afford something in those areas.

Maitland and Winter Park are very nice areas that would minimize your commute. Lake Brantley/wekiva/Sweetwater also great. Lake Mary is nearby and nice also.

Having lived in NOVA 4 years too long, I can unequivocally tell you that the traffic here is NOWHERE near as bad. Even the worst of Friday rush hour traffic can not compare to 495 or 66 on a normal day. That being said, unless you want to do the theme parks often, I would agree with the others and look at Winter Park as my top choice.

I am going to agree with everyone...forget Dr. Philips if you are going to work in Maitland. There's just no reason when Winter Park and Maitland (east of I-4) are just as nice if you like the older Florida vibe. If you like new Florida just head up to Lake Mary/Heathrow.

OP here. Thanks everyone for your recommendations! We'll look north first. I had read that Seminole Co schools were the best in the area anyway.

Mr Idealism - We spent 2 1/2 years in NOVA and felt that we had overstayed our welcome. I always said that it was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Boy, was I right

We got out of there just about 3 years ago and have not once regretted our decision. The rest of the family has already started to migrate south and despite them growing up there, they feel it's a shell of what it used to be. I hope everything works out for you. Central FL can be a great place to live if you have all your ducks in a row.
