It seems like Florida can only attract the high-end specialty stores or the discounters.

That's why I always say that regardless of how many Aldi's, Walmarts, Fresh Markets, and Whole Foods they build, Publix doesn't have real competition here.

Though there are things they do price well, and I really like their half price Tuesday sales. I get all my chicken breasts from there- $2.99 a pound for semi-leash-walked meat and trimmed so much nicer than Publix does so you aren't paying for fat you'll just have to cut off yourself.

I agree completely. Some will say there is plenty of competition but don't get that Publix by far has a monopoly on the traditional grocery end of the business which is where around half of Americans still shop and where those looking for better quality versus quantity (i.e. big box discounters) tend to patronize. If that's not a monopoly, I don't know what is.

Maybe Kroger will come to FL to compete with Publix. They compete in the metro Atlanta market and Kroger is a very nice alternative to Publix.

That's how it works with healthy food options. They don't provide the same yield as "conventional" food along with higher production costs so naturally it costs significantly more by the time it gets to market. The US spends the least when it comes to purchasing food (among industrialized countries) and the most on health care. See any correlation???

Super Target and Super Wal-mart provide enough price competition for me, esp ST.

I remember someone saying that Kroger was in Florida years ago and pulled out.

It's funny that you mentioned Atlanta. This is why I believe Kroger won't be coming back to Florida any time soon.

Publix takes No. 1 spot in Atlanta
