Wouldn't a portfolio of work be enough to offset the "no degree" dilemma?

Live sites only, and personal sites don't count. When I interviewed for my last (and best paying) web development position, I had three lives sites. One was the company I was working for, one was a company I worked for previously who kept me on as a consultant to maintain the web site when I left, and one was a local branch of an international not-for-profit. I was able to put publicly viewable comments into the code so I could prove it was my work.

You will be competing with junior developers who have BS degrees. They have no work experience but will get brought in on the fact they have a BS degree alone. Also while in college they very possibly could have been doing internships and work studies.

I have been developing web applications for years and am more in the senior level/management. I also have a Master's degree and industry certifications (CISSP, Security +).

Also really a computer science degree is good but it isn't the end all be all. I have a BS in Business and a MS in Information Technology.
