I recently got offered a position as a primary physician at the Orlando VA medical center (near Winter Park). I have a 6 y/o son and need to find a family oriented area with the best possible school district. I am planning on visiting Orlando on November 14 and want to be able to look at at least 2-3 areas. I have made some research and found good schools in the 33828 zip code but I don't know which area specifically to look there. Also read about Lake Nona and Oviedo. I truly need advice since I will probably be moving there in about two months. Will really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Make sure you know at which campus you will be seeing patients. The lake Baldwin campus is right in the middle of Baldwin park and winter park. These neighborhoods are completely different in feel, but both may be a good choice.

If you will be in lake nona, then lake nona may be a better choice. Commuting in orlando is not a lot of fun.

If you will be going to both campuses, you might want to consider something in the middle, like Delaney park in the blankner/Boone district.

I wouldn't imagine they would have a primary care physician seeing patients in two locations, so it'll be no doubt one or the other. If Baldwin Park I would focus on Oviedo/Winter Springs which is along with Lake Mary/Sanford the two best school districts in the metro area. Winter Park is a close third. Lake Nona could be a bit problematic for great schools nearby however Oviedo is an fairly easy 25-30 minute commute via the 417 (rarely traffic congested), but it is close to 30 miles each way. All in all given your desire for a more family-friendly environment with excellent schools I would focus on Oviedo/Winter Springs regardless of location.

I heard many Drs moved by Clermont and Celebration, and I guess Dr Phillips- good schools but again distance to work--and welcome. Hats of to those what work with our wounded.

Again, completely depends which hospital. Commuting from Clermont or Celebration to Lake Baldwin would be MISERABLE.

And why exactly when the better schools are closer?

Traffic is miserable if you have to go from one end to another-so if you work in one side of Orlando then to drive to the outskirts can be painful. For some reason, major highways do not connect, specially east to west. They plan to expand 1-4 soon and I pray God I would have moved by then. Trying to buy, closer to work. (OIA) We have a lot of tourist drivers.

If you're in Lake Baldwin the surrounding area is fine. Good area, convenient and very good schools.

I agree. But then look at the source and the other crazy stuff they post. They obviously know nothing about the area--heck they barely know their way around Clermont.
