And you're just finding out that you don't like cold weather ? Or has it gotten worse with age ?

Yeah, its really the hood up here. If u go out after dusk u better be wearing a vest. "Shots fired" is heard on the police scanner more frequently than "traffic stop". There are blocks and blocks of boarded up homes, most of them active crackhouses or prostitution themed. Meth is cheap up here because so many people are tweakers. Once the "one pot method" came to town its been overboard. When u go to the ATM (day or night) you need to have the weapon in your hand, one in the chamber. Next best thing is go with a friend who can watch your back. Kids getting taken off the street and out of playgrounds is a huge problem. 9 kids
disappeared just the other day, its those darn sex offenders. Lines are long at the supermarkets because the EBT scanners dont work so good. Overuse I guess. Banks are never crowded though. Dont think about leaving your car in the driveway. By morning that puppy is going to be on blocks. If u have a pick up truck u better bring that tailgate inside with u when u get home. Its strange when we go to 7-11 for our grocery shopping its hard to hear what the clerks are saying to each other because the plexiglass is so thick and hardly any openings in it. When gas was over $3 a gallon it was normal to find your gas tank empty. There were gangs coming around with a ice pick and a bucket. Ice pick to the gas tank or the gas line and into the bucket it went. Always drive with the windows up. Its no fun getting hit with a half empty coke can while u are sitting at the light or have one of the thousands of thugs walk up to the window and play a version of the knockout game. I tell ya, I know a lot of people who are dying to get out of here before they get killed. Some of us are hanging tight though. We do neighborhood watches with AK-47's and sit out on the front lawn drinking beer and whistling at the few women that go by. We just sit there, hit the pipe and drink Wild Irish Rose all night. Its funny when someone gets angry and the pellets start to fly. The thugs really dont care because they carry Mac-10's. Yeah, pretty bad up this way with all those rednecks and toothless people. Tell everybody!!!!!!!

I've always hated it. Always. It is definitely worse with age though. I wasn't courageous enough as a young person to move away by myself. Stayed to be near family. Now, ironically, my entire family has moved away (Dad moved to Florida 25 years ago and LOVES it - won't even come visit me here), so there's no reason to stay other than husband's job. He wants out of here as badly as I do and is actively looking for the right job to get us out.

Good for you ... I've heard that there are lots of Midwestern folks in the Tampa Bay area in case you need your Chicago fix.

maybe they cant leave because of elderly parents that need care, maybe they cant scrape the cash together to rent a truck, pay deposits on an apartment, utilities, all that stuff. Maybe they are unskilled and dont know how to fill out a job application. Maybe they have kids in school and cant rip them from the football team, tennis team, choir, what ever. Not everybody can just pack up and go ya know.

I guess the 99,000 people who came here in the past 14 years missed the memo.

LOL!! I'm thinking you are razzing leftee for his posts....

In our case, we have no kids, my Mom lives in Pittsburgh with my sister, my Dad lives near Ft. Myers (all alone - and one of the reasons we want to move to FL - can't be too close but need to be closer than 1000 miles in case something happens to him).

I keep my job since I work from home anyway, it's just my husband who is in a very niche job that is tough to find. It pays well but there aren't often openings. He just spends lots of time searching, calling and emailing. At some point something will hit and we will be GONE.

We do need to sell our home here but the market is good (for now) and we have good equity. So I'm praying for something in the next few months so we can take advantage of the Spring housing market.

In the meantime, I spend my days alternately dreaming (of warm weather and sunshine and peace and tranquility) and crying (from the cold, dark, rat race induced misery).

Who said anything about leaving ? I asked her if she was just finding out now about disliking cold weather.

That wasn't even a nice try ... but we'll give you a ribbon just like the rest of the team though.
