Can anyone tell me if this is a good area to live? Located on L B Mcleod Rd. in Orlando. Also what does electricity run monthly.

Do you know if condos have been renovated and are up to code now? Just viewed on-line. Planning a trip there soon. what about crime in that area? Thank you for any info.

Facing Interstate 4 in south Orlando, Catalina Isles was an aging apartment complex until it was converted to a condominium near the peak of the home-buying frenzy — with the help of federally backed reverse mortgages. The "loans" allowed tenants and other buyers to pay South Florida developer Angel Lage, though the reverse mortgages were based on the units being worth a lot more than they actually were.

Six years later, the complex has so many safety hazards that it had recently racked up $443,200 in code-enforcement violations from the city of Orlando. Mold streaks some of the buildings' exterior walls. Units are plagued by leaks and electrical problems. Residents have written everyone from President Barack Obama to Oprah Winfrey to draw attention to what they call deplorable conditions.

"The last time I heard from the federal government was when they were investigating," said Deena Scott, who lives there with her 87-year-old mother, Essie Mae Scott.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development refers fraud cases to its Office of Inspector General for investigation. A HUD official had previously said the agency was reviewing appraisals, sales and the money trail related to the condo conversion, but the status of the investigation, and whether it is ongoing, is uncertain.
