Plan on moving to this area in a year from Bayonne,NJ. Will have a BA in English and while I may still struggle with finding a job, I have hopes to get into the media industry and I'm thinking that this may be the right area. Any suggestions? Also moving here because my mother wants to go there anyway and I definitely won't be able to live on my own.

Maybe an English teacher if you pass the required exams. I don't know what English has to do with media though, I think you'll have trouble.

Los Angeles is where the film industry is located, but there are millions of people like you trying to get their foot in the door, well thousands hehe. If you don't have already have a portfolio, I don't think you have any chance whatsoever, just trying to be honest. Get a job first and then in your spare time start building your film career. Who knows maybe one day you'll catch a big break. If you have a good idea start with youtube. There are many people who started with youtube and now make six figures just from it.

Well, I want to write for media. Guess I'll keep writing until I get my big break.

The trick to writing for any desirable projects is to write for whoever will pay you money. When I was starting out, I wrote golf course history books (even though I don't golf), promotional materials for places I have never visited, and even a book about types of barns.

The best place to break into writing is through filler pieces for magazines. If you can, send out 5-10 well-thought queries per day, seven days a week. Do this for 3-5 years and you'll have enough clips behind you that you can start approaching people about mediocre projects. In the meantime, if you've got the Great American Novel in you, keep working on that on the side. Once it is done, take your long list of clips and your project and find an agent. Keep shopping around until you find someone to take you on. And hope for lots of luck along the way.
