I'm from Seattle too. Common! You've gotta miss Seattle alittle in July and Aug! The rest of the year Florida rocks!

It seems much worse in most other cities I've been to / lived in.
It's not so much the expressway traffic, but rather the local roads, which reek of poor designs combined with terrible drivers. People say DC traffic is terrible; I'll take driving around DC any day over my commute here. It takes me literally at least 30 minutes to drive the 3.5 mile stretch from the 414/OBT intersection to Lake Destiny during rush hour, and it's mainly due to poor light coordination and idiotic bottleneck-causing designs at both OBT and 434. That's one of MANY examples in the Orlando area.

Couldn't agree more. I swear the lights in this city are literally timed to CAUSE traffic. Orlando is the definition of driving red light to red light. It's a miracle if you can make it through two green lights in a row on a busy road. Lights here are not timed correctly at all.

Having a family is what drove us here. Everyone's lives are different but the bottom line for us was that we didn't want to be house poor and wanted to stretch the dollar. PA/Sunnyvale and now even San Jose are priced insanely high. When we started looking for homes we saw consistent trends for a 3bdrm 2 bath house:

Lousy school district:
675-750k needed upgrades
750k - 1million with upgrades

Good school district:
750k - 1 mil needed upgrades
1mil to 1.5 with upgrades

It was depressing. We were paying 4k a month in rent. We weren't house poor (we could do things with the kids every weekend) but it seemed impossible to save for a healthy downpayment.

Sure, the salaries were high but it really isn't enough unless you land a gig with great RSUs as your signing bonus. I saw too many families making 150k and living check to check. State income tax, high gas prices, expensive housing, no water (water fines), etc. It didn't seem sustainable. 150k a year stretches much further in Orlando and you can create a great lifestyle for you and your family. The culture here, that I've noticed, is great - different but great. I find people are generally friendly, restaurants are great, and there is a diverse range of backgrounds. So far, I'm very glad I have moved here. Adjust to the weather but that will come. I miss the mountains and Santa Cruz but Florida has many beautiful areas that are different but easily compare in beauty.

I have noticed the surface street lights do suck. Can the city/county or whatever afford to put in more smart lights?
