Hi,
I have been offered a position making 105K in the Altamonte Springs area. I have a family with 2 kids and plan on sending kids to private schools. Is this a good salary? I'm relocating from the midwest with a current salary of 115. I really don't want to take a paycut, but I know living in FL is cheaper, supposedly. So, what do you guys think?
Thank you

You'll do pretty well. Does your wife work? It all depends on your lifestyle. Car payments, mortgage, extra bills, sports, etc. But yes, it's a good salary here. Better than good.

IMO Florida is cheaper for folks from the west coast and the northeast, but not if you're from the Midwest.. unless... are you from Chicago?
(I'm originally from Wisconsin)

It depends upon where from in the Midwest as already stated. It'll be fairly equivalent if moving from Chicago and perhaps more expensive of a bottom line if from say Indianapolis or St Louis. There is a fairly widespread misconception that Orlando is a cheap city to move to, which is so not the case as it's pretty much on par overall with the national average.

Most of the midwestern states have a state income tax. Since Florida has none, I'd say you'd likely be doing as well if not better here!

Question RE: Relocation to Orlando, Florida

Only if you Love the heat. Ten thousand will be a drop in the bucket with an expensive lifestyle.

Car insurance and homeowners/rental insurance is significantly higher than in the Midwest so the no state income tax doesn't matter much.

Interesting. This is good info. As far as the insurances, is it a lot more than in the Chicago area for example?

Car insurance will be similar in terms of cost and homeowners insurance probably a good bit higher. We have a very high rate of uninsured drivers here which keeps premiums higher.

I don't know what the OP pays for car insurance where he currently lives, but we pay under $200/mo for two cars that have full coverage, which I don't consider excessive.
