It is really hard to become a police officer. To be hired they must pass a written test, physical test, polygraph, very stringent background and reference check and then pass the academy. The application process can take 6-9 months and in the end they know EVERYTHING about you. I am sure every now and then a bad person slips through the cracks but compared with most every other job/career their screening is far more selective. The polygraph knocks out around 60% of the applicants alone (of the ones that even make it that far).
No I am not a police officer. I just know how it works.

It is procedure not being psycho. Every person is a potential threat even if they look sweet and innocent. I sure would not get the phone call that my nephew was killed when he pulled someone over because he was too trusting.

Exactly, there is zero risk of accident getting shot by an officer from just his hand over his gun while it is holstered, yet it might deter a would be criminal to not try anything funny. People should go move to a ghetto of a major coty if they think life would be so much better without cops.
