1st in "Job Opportunities."

48th in socio-economics. Considering the extremely high percentage of service sector jobs, this really isn't bad at all.

Keep it up, Orlando.

Plenty of garbage jobs available in an area with no affordable housing and no social services. Sounds fantastic!

Garbage jobs are better than no jobs.

What the what??

1st in Job Opportunities? I suppose if one is counting all jobs available which largely runs the gamut of part-time/no benefits service sector jobs, with a sprinkling of decent-paying jobs that have dozens applying for each. It's been fairly well-documented how difficult the job market is here, even for those who are qualified for the relative precious few skilled positions. And the ranking just above Atlanta in "Socio-Economics" invalidates in my opinion with these criteria...

Socio-economics – Total Points: 20
Median Annual Income: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Atlanta's is at 29,800, Orlando is at 28,500
Note: This metric was adjusted for the cost of living. Orlando has a higher average rent and higher home prices overall, so..???
Average Work & Commute Time: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric measures the average length of a workday and the average commute time.
Transit Accessibility of Workplace: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric measures the number of jobs accessible by a 30-minute transit ride per total civilian workforce.
Transit Score: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: Transit Score is a patented measure of how well a location is served by public transit.

Atlanta wins this obviously in a landslide.
Housing Affordability: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric was calculated as follows: Housing Costs (accounts for both rental and sale prices) / Median Annual Household Income. Again, Atlanta wins this one
Annual Transportation Costs: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Safety: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric measures the crime rate.
Family-Friendliness: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric is based on WalletHub’s “Best & Worst Places to Raise a Family” ranking.
Dating-Friendliness: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric is based on WalletHub’s “Best & Worst Cities for Singles” ranking.
Recreation-Friendliness: Full Weight (~2.00 Points)
Note: This metric is based on WalletHub’s “Best & Worst Cities for Recreation” ranking.

The rest are no clear cut either way arguably, so again would say the scoring (and weight) is questionable.

Most jobs are minimum wage and there are no benefits. It is difficult to get a well paying job in Orlando. The average income of an Orlando resident is $28,500 a year. Half fall below and half above. I am assuming that the above are police officers, teachers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, nurses, managers, truck drivers......Most of these folks make over 40k a year. These salaries give the average a boost.

There is a very high student ratio here. Couple that with the tourist capital of the country, and you have a huge number of kids working in the service sector. This is why the "average wage" is so low. Most adults aren't feeding their families on ~$25,000/year.

There's actually a very low student ratio here as just under 6% of the population according to US Census data is between the ages of 18 and 24 (i.e. college age). The average wage is so low because the average job is usually in the service industry (hospitality or retail), given the two combine to make up 40% or so of the job market here. Orlando's average median salary (individual, not household) didn't land on 26K by accident...

6% is not "very low."
It's in the top 15 for large metros in the country.

And again: The low figures aren't because there is a lack of jobs -- Like you (and I) said, the service sector dominates, as Florida as a whole is tourist-driven. This doesn't mean that an engineer, a doctor, a nurse, etc., will have a hard time finding a quality job here.
