I'm from Miami and know about nightlife but the last thing I would ever call Orlando is boring in this regard. It's no Miami but then again not many cities are. Sports bars are a dime a dozen in Orlando and they are spread through out the metro even in the suburbs.
Tourists go the Disney / Universal places and most locals stick to everywhere else.

The majority of Orlando's nightlife is concentrated DT. This is outstanding for club hopping and bar crawls, there are also many fantastic live music venues to boot. Elsewhere in the metro there are much smaller pockets of nightlife including CityWalk, Disney Springs, I-Drive, and beyond.

Whenever I've visited Atlanta we've always had to move around much further distances to experience the same quantity of nightlife one can get by walking Orange and Pine in DT Orlando. This is just my experience however. Perhaps Atlanta's may be more spread out but "better"/more preferential, however my nightlife days are almost all but over.

It's not just your experience. It's how it is. I go there fairly frequently. There is no particular "main strip" or anything of the sort. Midtown has a few spots, but for the most part, you need to drive from place to place... Or use Uber.

Orlando punches far above its weight in terms of what it has to offer for a city of its size. And it should, considering the heavy tourist population at any given time.

As you mentioned, DT, City Walk, and Disney Springs are about as lively as it gets. For locals, there is also plenty on along Mills Ave.

Atlanta if you like mountains and cooler weather.

Orlando if you like theme parks and beaches.

Both would be hot in the summer however, though Atlanta is probably slightly less humid.

And should you be into Latin music:

For me and my husband, Orlando has the best Latino music scene in the continental US. There are dance clubs for many Latin music tastes (Puerto Rican salsa for the older crowd, Colombian salsa, mixed Latin music - Reggaeton, Bachata etc. - for the younger crowd, etc.), outdoor and indoor concerts with famous Latin artists, sometimes for free (e. g. Pitbull gave a free outdoor concert here last Saturday), outdoor fiestas, dances in style with famous Latin artists in hotels, etc.

And many Latin radio stations for different tastes! We have 6 Latin radio stations programmed in the car, and that is only a selection.

I'm not sure who is telling you these things, but they don't know what they're talking about. Most any place is as fun or boring as you want it to be. Too, "boring" and "fun" is up to personal interpretation. Getting loaded in a bar isn't my idea of "fun" and there's no metro in the nation that doesn't have its share of watering holes. So, to each his own. As far as Orlando goes, north of the Florida Tnpk., Orlando is like any other growing metro city. I lived there for a year at one time and loved it. Lots of great neighborhoods, parks, greeways, and lakes. For things to do in the evenings, there's downtown, City Walk at Universal, Disney Springs, and Winter Park. I have ranked metro areas, small towns, and retirement areas since 1985. In the rankings I'm just finishing up for 2020, Orlando ranks 5th out of 233 metro areas in recreational assets, talking population into consideration. So to say that Orlando is boring is laughable. But, there's no one-size-fits-all city or metro. Orlando isn't for everyone. As great as Atlanta is, it's not for everyone. You need to take some time out to see Orlando for yourself if Orlando is a fit for YOU, not your friends who have false ideas of what Orlando is about. I love both Atlanta and Orlando. They both have very good qualities of life. Good luck wherever you end up.
