I was wondering about this area. If it's safe. The diversity of the population. If it's a nice place to live.

Generally safe. It's a mixed bag of... Everything really. Homes are old, but some are VERY well-kept, while others are falling apart.
Any reason why you're inquiring about this particular area?

I saw a rather nice home there the last time I visited and was wondering about the area. My friend who lives in Clermont had given me some cautions about Apopka and crime, but it sounded like that may have related more to South Apopka. Would you say this part was improving, declining, or pretty much staying the same?

Staying the same.
Crime in Apopka is mostly limited to South Apopka.
The area you're looking at has quite a few schools, as well as a satellite OC courthouse and a police station, and is HEAVILY patrolled by cops. I wouldn't worry too much about crime there.
As a matter-of-fact, when driving around there, MAKE SURE you're following speed limits and school signs. You will get pulled over otherwise.

Ha! That's good to know. Thanks.

Would you say it leans more on the urban side of suburban, as opposed to, say, Longwood?

That's a tough one... Maybe, in that there is more aggressive bus service in the area, and nearby "downtown Apopka" has a few urban bones. But neither are remotely urban IMO.
One thing I REALLY like about the area you're looking at, is that it's basically the head of the West Orange Trail.
