I see some houses in the Lake Mary area that back up to the Florida Trail. Is this just kind of asking for trouble with regard to crime and home theft?

Are you talking about the area by Rinehart? If so, it's a perfectly fine area. I'm actually considering moving near there myself.

Even better. That's specifically where I'm looking myself. Buddy of mine just bought a house in the area. I absolutely love it there. One of the nicer, middle-class, non-cookie cutter, traditional "suburbias" of the Orlando area.
I wouldn't worry about crime there. If anything, just invest in a cheap alarm system (you should have one anyway, regardless of where you move. There are idiots everywhere.)

Thanks. My only hesitation with the area is the lack of public service gas lines in these neighborhoods. It's not a need, but I would certainly like a gas stove top.

Otherwise known as the Markham Woods area which blends in to Longwood a bit further south. I agree with Arcenal, it's definitely one of the nicer areas and given it's close proximity to the much higher priced subdivisions (such as Alaqua, Heathrow and Wingfield Reserve) a bit of a bargain and doesn't get any safer in terms of home security. That said as an affluent area it could be the target of burglaries but a decent security system with exterior signage should be enough of a deterrent to those random long shot possibilities. The piece of mind with fire detection is worth it alone in my opinion.

As a Real Estate Broker, I've sold many homes in that area, and they have never complained about the crime at all. I have not been on the trail myself, but as far as "Orlando" areas go, that sure is one of the better ones!
