The airport has been there since 1928. It's not a surprise that it's there. With 600 or more aircraft movements per day, it's an important airport.

It was there to serve a military base that used to be across the street.
As it is now, it’s just a huge nuisance for anyone other than the ultra-rich, and it hinders the growth and development of Orlando’s core. At some point, it will inevitably have to go. It’s not an “important airport.” It’s being used only because it’s there, but it’s not a necessity to anyone. There are plenty of other options to park planes that are not in the middle of the city.

The military didn't start using it until 1940, and the base you refer to(Naval Training Center Orlando) was built later than the actual airport. See history here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_Executive_Airport

Where would the airplanes go? There doesn't seem to be a surfeit of airports in the area.

IMO the whole thing should be moved. I know it’s unlikely, but it’s the reason downtown Orlando can’t have tall buildings, and that’s a huge plot of valuable land. Move it to Bithlo or something.

The history of the airport is irrelevant. In 1928 Orlando was just a town with an airport on its fringe. There's a major city here now. Having a 1,000 acre noisemaking, non-revenue producing, traffic complicating hole 3 miles from downtown isn't a good move.

There's more than enough room at Sanford and Kissimmee to split the traffic from ORL. Sanford is comically large and underused. There's enough room to add a 2nd runway to Apopka. DeLand and Titusville and New Smyrna also all have perfectly serviceable, general aviation airports. Closing ORL isn't going to hurt anyone.

Non-revenue producing? All airports produce revenue.

Passenger airports run a profit. ORL is not one of those. Maybe it creates a small surplus but is it a bigger bottom line vs. what could be there and not just there on the airport site because the airport restricts development as far away as downtown and has severe restrictions within a 1/2 mile.

But yeah, I'm happy to change my mind if someone wants me to show a budget for ORL that isn't hidden inside the numbers for MCO.
