I'm glad to hear the schools in Apopka are good. We've heard mixed things about the schools there but I'm confident are daughter will do fine. She's going to be starting in 2 weeks at Wolf Lake and she's very excited and nervous about the big change.

Well, I looked at about 4 houses today in Sanford with my realtor. I wasn't very impressed. It seemed every subdivision you hasd to drive through a crap area to get to it. I did like Preserve at Lake Monroe, but not the house for me. Also the schools seem to be luck of the draw and only if in the NW cluster. It seems like more house for the money, but what about resale?
Any thoughts, thanks.

Default Be cautious or be wet

I live in Seminole county.Great schools, nice, fairly safe small county. That said, if Sanford(or Deland, Debary to the north) is a choice be VERY cautious about checking elevations. We had bad floods in recent years and some areas were way under! Question why the house was remodeled. Also, roofs here last ONLY 15 yrs. Don't take " it has another 5 yrs warranty". This is also 30min. to either Otown or Daytona beach, and not as touristy as southside. Otown's crime rate is much higher and mouseland area is full of drivers who don't know where they're going. Apopka is in fast growth mode so it changes every month. jmo

Deland and DeBary much more so on the flooding than Sanford, but yeah.... Something any perspective homebuyer in Florida should be cautious of....

I totally agree with you. When I first moved here I lived in an apartment in Sanford...

I was so glad to get out.
I would NEVER send a child to school in Sanford, terrible drug problems.
I have a friend who is a sheriffs deputy, Sanford is where they go to find the perp or question someone...not a nice place...

428k but I sure as dont want to spend that type of Money to be in a crime infested area

P.S. Has Sanford gotten any better i like a house there also
Apopka has some good and newer areas and some old and yucky ones too.

Altamonte is horrible, as it ios overcrowded and it's getting very dirty. Uptown Altamonte is ridiculous... $500,000 for a 2bed condo in a building. Pathetic.

Sanford still sucks. Lots of new construction, but the Sanfordians often come down to Lake Mary for robberies, gangs race cars in Lakle Mary too. Just recently, some guy died in Lake Mary on an illegal car race.

Anyway, Sanford is still Sanford. Crime and poverty still dominates the area, despite the new builds. You buy in Sanfrord, you get the stigma of being in Sanford! If you livfed in Altamonte, you should know what I am taking about.

If your curious about whats going on in a certain area, you should be able to find crime stats...I have found some in the Orlando Sentinal, scroll down and you can find the different counties links...

You could also contact local Sheriff departments for more information.

On myflorida.com you can find a link to check the local sexual predators and sex offenders. The list for Sanford is mind boggling.

I used to work in Lake Mary and the girls used to ask me to print up the list for their area to they would know what to look for to protect their children. One of the girls lived in Sanford, she was dumbstruck at the list.

I see that a lot of these are old posts, but I cannot think what some members were thinking. Worst schools? No way! While all schools have issues, Apopka Middle is a "A: school, Rock Springs, Dream Lake elementary likewise!
Apopka high is a "B" which is a lot better than many schools. It is a brand new facility, with excellent Magnet programs. One of my kids is in the medical magnet, and twice a week goes to hospital and job shadows a doctor. He has seen open heart surgery, stent replacement and so much more. As he is planning a medical career, this is invaluable. I don't think he would get this experience anywhere else. Bad schools? - I MUST disagree!!
