I cannot believe I am saying this, but don't let people on this board discourage you. You cannot make an informed decision strictly on the comments of the people on this board, myself included.

There are nice areas around Winter Park as well; areas such as Maitland, Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Longwood and Winter Springs. Most of the schools in these areas are top notch, especially the schools in Seminole County.

All I gotta say is good luck driving from GoldenRod Rd. to the Universal area everyday. Its gonna get old quick. You might want to find a closer school to your work or home.

You haven't seen anything yet, wait until you get down here and realize it's too hot to leave your house until November. Noodles is 100% correct, that commute is a disastor.

Toll Roads, oppressive heat, violent crime, flat with weeded vegatation, void of culture, overcrowded, and 45 minute beach, great area

It is something you have to be sure of before moving here because it is not for everyone. I think the area is beautiful with the vegetation and the lakes. I happen to like the heat and humidity but know that June through August or so is pretty severe for some. There is some culture in the central areas and some great museums in both the Winter Park and Loch Haven Park areas. Most of the rest of town is characterless strip malls and subdivisions, some nicer than others. It is about 45 minutes to the closest beach, and the nicer beaches are further away on the west coast. I continue to think that crime is a little exaggerated on this forum. I am not afraid to leave my house yet, never witness anything shady going on, never feel unsafe in my home or when I am out, etc. The area is what you make of it, jobs are hard right now here and thus the area is depressed, but there are a lot of redeeming qualities as well. I did a lot of research before moving here probably not unlike yourself and was pleasantly surprised when I moved here 3 years ago which is supposedly when things started to go downhill. The experience I have had has been a good one. I am not trying to sugarcoat Orlando, if it were a dump like people say I would leave.
I think my biggest concern moving here would be the right job, the right area, and the overall poor quality of schools.

Wiltshire, did you just move here? June through August? September is probably the worst month of the year here and you don't really get sustained cooler temperatures until december.

I have lived here from 2005. I thought about how bad September when I was typing that and honestly couldn't remember. I am not seasonally affected by the weather unless it is could. I do know that October and November are much more tolerable and usually when I suggest people visit me from out of town. The only months I don't like are January and February because it gets too cold for my thinned blood.
