Should people worry about alligators in the middle of huge lakes in Florida? I recently took my boat out in Lake George, which is pretty massive (about 46,000 acres) and swam in the middle of the lake.
There were alot of people swimming on shore beaches around the lake.
I do have a lab who likes to swim in the middle of the lake.
Should I be concerned about gators in the middle of the lake or do they stay near the shore?
I know there is always some concern in any water and even ocean beaches have more sharks around than people realize.

Most Floridians live by the rule "If there's water, there's gators." I would worry about your dog more than yourself believe it or not because dogs are more susceptible to being attacked than humans, because dogs resemble the natural prey of alligators. Attacks on human are pretty rare but I personally don't take that risk and head to the beach or a pool over a lake. Here's a helpful website I found: Living with Alligators

I personally would not swim in a lake in Florida. I do however, boat, canoe and jet ski without a second thought. The few gators I have encountered just ignore me and I move on.

I've been in FL my whole life and I won't swim in lakes. Between gators and bacteria it isn't worth the risk.

We were just in Orlando and walking around the community pond at Thornhill (just north of the Magic Kingdom) and we saw a gator in there!! It's not a big lake---1/2 a mile around the entire perimeter.

Let's put it this way, Disney can't even completely keep them out of there lakes, so I don't think I would be trying it.

And yes, please read up on the amoebas and that danger in Florida lakes.

Gators like being near the shore more than the middle. The middle is the safest place to swim.

There used to be a water park at Disney that they had to close because it fed off the natural lake water in the 7 seas lagoon. The reason: bacteria (amoebas) that could get into your nasal passages and kill you. That is all I needed to learn to not be interested in swimming in the lakes here. The alligators do not help either. I am happy in my chlorinated pool
=)
