I have lived in several different states, yet Fl is my favorite. I enjoyed organic markets, fresh foods, wonderful art and music, beaches, dolphin watching, boating, nice people. I have lived in Chicago, Indiana, WI, and FL. It seems every place i have been is transient these days. No one seems to live in the same place all their life; it is the times we live in. Every big city has road rage, but if you really want to deal with a lot of that go to LA or Chicago. In Chicago uyou can have road rage with a side of ice or snow to top of your nerves. However, they have some great food. You can find good and bad every where, so decide what is important to you and go for it. life is short.

I personally didn't like the cold in Chicago or getting mugged at lunch time in the middle of a city where not one person offered to help me. In IN we have been here 4 years and within that time we have 8 new neighbors within a block. Talk about transiant. I have seen one house sell twice. Not to mention the forclosures and empty houses that were abundant!
Lets face it, there are problems everywhere. I never had anything remotely close happen in FL and people where always friendly and offering to help with all kinds of things. I can't wait to move back. My suggestion if your a parent and worried about sex offenders is to know where your kids are. Don't let them stay with families you don't know. this should be your number one priority. the days of letting kids roam around un supervised were over 20 years ago.
Get to know people and check their back grounds before you ever let them watch your kids. It is easy to do. I think Florida shows more, because they are stricter and some states are pathetic with their registration practices. For example, there is one that lives down the street from us, He was only on the regitry for a couple years, then he was off, but still lives there. Just because they don't show up anymore, doesn't mean you are safe. And statistics say most victims are preyed on by people they knew.
Taxes are high every where. $10,000 a year here for a 2700 sq ft newer home. nothing extravegant, but i think florida has some areas that are still much lower than that.

In other countries a sexual offender would have a part removed or be hung. The crime rates are much lower than ours. I think we should reinstitute these practices here and maybe they would think twice before preying on inoccent little girls or boys. Not to mention we wouldn't all have to pay for them to live in jail while we all work to pay these high taxes. I think Americans are far too accepting of criminal behavorier and now they run the place. Just look at California. they just released 6,000 prisoners because they couldn't affrod to keep them in jail. ALl dif types of crimes and now they are free. If we had stricter laws in the first place these people would have thought seriously before they did these things. Now we have a entire class of criminals that know they will be able to get away with it with a slap on the hand. have you ever noticed how many of these sex offenders have multiple charges? And who ever said that about just the registered ones is also right. I was attacked as a child by a step brother who was 13 years older than i was, he didn't get caught and never got charged with anything. I was 6, nothing ever happened to him.

I watch my kids like a hawk all the time. It stinks and it is work, but i know they are safe.

I have to say, we are from NJ and lived in Waxhaw, NC for 3.5 years and now live in Winter Garden - the downtown area, and I feel more safe here than I did in NC. There were armed robberies and burgleries and convicted murderers right outside our door practically and we live in a nice area. My neighbor in NC was pushing her 4 month old baby in daylight and got mugged by another neighbor. You can say what you want about "northerners" but I never heard anyone doing that before!!! There are no jobs in NC and ALOT of people on drugs and they are desperate! My husband and I have been offered more jobs here in Florida. We both have pretty good jobs at Disney (the higher paying ones) and I must say, I like Florida alot more than I thought I would. Also, if I read these negative posts before I moved here and listened to people, it would scare the heck out of me to move here. Crime is everywhere but at least in Florida, you know the areas to stay away from but in NC it seems to be intermixed with the nice areas. Also, the "southerners' were nice to your face and stab you in the back! Us "northerners" - what you see is what you get! We either like you or we dont but we are not fake!! So you can have your NC!!!! Just my personal opinion!

TMI But to put this in perspective, as some folks mentioned in 2008, it really breaks down to registration. For example, I was abused by my father but never reported it so he was never entered into the system. So, all the people that lived near him and did a handy dandy little search, would never have know they lived near a man that should not be left alone with children. Thankfully, he has passed away.

I do agree with the fact that FL is warm and has a large transient/homeless population COULD factor in; and I understand that some 15-16 year old girls (and younger) may be hanging out with older men...but under both of these conditions, where the heck are the parents? It is our responsibility to tell our children what to stay away from and what is appropriate and not appropriate. My daughter is only 2 1/2 but you can bet your a$$, if she was 14 and caught hanging out with some 18+ guy, she'd be reeled in RIGHT QUICK. And how would I catch her? Because she'd only be 14 and I would KNOW WHAT SHE WAS DOING!!

In NC, 16 is the age of consent. How is that any better than FL? Those 16 and 17 year olds can LEGALLY DECIDE to drive in those Jaguars with those older men.

And as for making kids who are 18 or 19 that had consensual sex with a 15, 16, or 17 year old, be registered offenders if the parents press charges (which happens quite often), is really not any better! I was 15 when my boyfriend, who was 18, first became intimate. And it was consensual.

Now, if someone is legitimately raped, that is a completely different story and those people should have stricter penalties. So I will agree with the "forceful poster" that something should be done about that. But it is because people make such sweeping generalizations that it makes it difficult to get laws passed that do what they are truly meant to do. And being emotional about it does not help; it only further weakens your position.

With that said, I'm going to go see if I can find the sex offender search and see how the neighborhoods we've been looking at relocating to stand!

Just looked - not really any worse off than the house we own now in Raleigh, NC.
One thing that is sort of "better" about the NC registry - it gives you ages of the victim and offender at time of crime. Helps put things in perspective.

I was looking in specific neighborhoods all around florida..when I type in an address in the fdle.Web site..the house immediately becomes surrounded by dozens of predators and sex offenders...I was shocked..okay many crimes were men looking at child porn..but..still having.to shop and interact with these people..was shocking...I live in a large northern city..shootings have become the norm of our urban lifestyle..so I typed in our registered offenders and thankfully the list was nearly as vast as florida..however
.someone noted florida has a strict registry..bad or good....it's very unsettling. .while overall crime rates are lower rapes are much higher. ..I know one thing for sure..as a retired law enforcement officer..I will continue to arm myself if we choose to reside in the sunshine state..im.going to take stand your ground to a whole different level..

OK, one more time. Florida DOES NOT have a high propensity of sex offenders. To start with, every state handles registries differently and Florida is among the several states that do not remove sex offenders from the registry after a preset period of time (which in most states can be as little as five to fifteen years). So, considering this is the third most populated state and the fact that registry is permanent one should rationally see why the numbers are so "high".

Sex offender registry laws by state, mapped.

Get me outta here! (been stuck here 17 years and soon plan to return to my lovely home state of North Carolina!)
Our database shows there are 16,446 registered Sex Offenders in North Carolina, a ratio of 16.86 offenders per 10,000 residents. Records indicate there are 1,640 incarcerated Sex Offenders in the North Carolina, as well as 251 offenders whose location is unknown in North Carolina due to the offenders being transient or their address being unmappable.Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Our database shows there are 46,892 registered Sex Offender or Predators in Florida, a ratio of 24.27 offenders per 10,000 residents. So we get more-- because he/she is right-- it is warmer-
but as for our state I love it- love my weather- beaches and ambiance- and I do wonder -of the 46K offenders how many northerners? If we were not a tourist/ snow bird destination- probably be as quiet as a palm tree blowing with the sea breezes --

North Carolina has a 30 year limit for registry, so if the offender hasn't been charged again their name is removed from the registry. North Carolina could very well have a ratio as high as Florida minus that so if they want to think otherwise, let 'em!
