I live outside of Reno nowadays, but desperatley want to get back to FL as soon as i can save up some money and get a job down there. Just getting a head start on the research part. I really like central Florida and really fell in love with it when I got Scuba certified at a place called Ginnie Springs. Anyway, I really really really want to know the residents opinions on which city offers a more pleasant outdoors experience. I will be looking to find nice spots to camp, swim, hike, fish, kayak. I do prefer fresh water to salt. I hear that Orlando is the greener of the two...but that Tampa has nicer beaches. What do you guys think?? Which place is prettier???

I would say Tampa, because there may be more trees in Orlando but there are still parks and trails in the Tampa area and the beaches win hand down. I love Orlando to death, but I have to side with Tampa on this one.

I love Orlando too, but Clearwater Beach and the surrounding areas put any beach close to Orlando to shame. The burbs of Tampa are also much nicer and full of trees where as Orlando is becoming nothing but strip malls and parking lots.

Tampa would be the best choice for outdoor activities.

Tampa's bright spot is obvious, the beach and ocean. Orlando has a Wekiva Springs State Park and Blue Springs State Park. Neither city is good for hiking in my opinion because they have no mountains or even hills for that matter. There is great kayaking in Wekiva Springs, I even saw an aligator the last time I went. Since they are only 45-60 minutes away from each other, visit both again. I honestly prefer Orlando because I think Tampa really is the pits "hence the arm pit of Florida", but that's just my opinion. If you enjoy the ocean and beach, go for Tampa, specifically Clearwater. You can jet-ski, sail, scuba dive, fish etc. If you are deciding soley on outdoor activities, the Tampa area has more, but if you are deciding between a combo of outdoor activities and city, I'd choose Orlando. However, if you want the beach...there are much nicer beach cities in Florida...I'd recommend Palm Beach Gardens. It's a great city, has a beautiful ocean, Jupiter is right next door where they have an awesome snorkeling coral reef area and it's just an overall nice part of Florida.

Tampa really is pretty gritty compared to Orlando and there are better beach cities. I forgot about Wekiva too in my post for the most part.
