Has Eastern Orlando dramatically changed? (real estate, apartment, crime rate) - Florida (FL) - City-Data Forum

I'm moving down in March or April and we will be staying with my in-laws for the time being, until we find an apartment. I was wondering about the Eastern area of Orlando? I have been hearing bad things about it lately. Like, crime is seeping into areas such as Waterford Lakes, etc.?? I remember when I lived in Orlando (2006) Waterford Lakes area seemed to be really nice. Not too much crime out there and the crime that they did have seemed to be isolated incidents. We were considering some really nice places out in that area, but now I am not so sure.

I think it is more diverse and gets busier everyday. I know there are some issues with crime but if you had no problem in 2006 I am sure it is about the same now. I think people who really complain about it are comparing it to the 90s or early 2000s, or they are threatened by diversity. I personally do not like dealing with some of the people in that area and it mostly comes down to those from the NY/NJ areas.

Area hasn't changed much since 2006 other than that real estate there is much cheaper now. There are still crime area's the close to hwy 50 you get, but in general it's the same as in 06'.

Some people just get a bit frustrated with how crowded Waterford Lakes shopping center can get when you add in all the students in the area but if you where here in 06 it's nothing you haven't experienced before.

I agree, since 2006 not much has changed, that was right before the recession hit, It pretty much looks the same too because the construction everywhere stopped after 2006. If you liked it in 2006 you will most likely still like it. what i meant in that other post about how crime is spreading east from the Azalea park area was in comparison to times like the 90s and early 2000s, I watched my community change in front of my eyes when the development boom occurred in this area beginning around 1998. This area back in the late 90s was a lot different. There was no town center, there was no walmart supper center, there was just a regular walmart and it was where boardwalk bowl is now. The intersection of alafaya and lake underhill was just woods on all four corners, there was just the small subdivision of waterford lakes and eastwood in the middle of the woods. by the late 90s this area exploded with growth, thousands of homes were built, stores popped up everywhere including the town center and the new walmart super center, a new High school was built along with many other schools. all this happened in a matter 3-5 years. And of course all of this development made the crime rate rise.

Well if much hasn't changed then I am sure I will like the area. Let's just hope it doesn't get worse. I do agree with it being crowded because of the busy shopping center. Taking a left out of that plaza was like a death wish. But, that's what comes with the territory when you're living in Orlando. There is traffic everywhere.

It probably hasnt changed much since 06. Bet a lot of people have come and gone since 06 though. Orlando has changed A LOT in the last 7-10 years, but since just 06, not too much.

Well, you do have to take into account that UCF is the 3rd largest school in the nation now, & there's over 55k students there this year. College kids generally have a poor reputation, and, while it's not always accurate, there are plenty of people out there willing to prove that reputation correct. So, I'd say that probably the further you are from the school, the 'safer' you'll be.

I agree to a certain extent. Many of them drive like idiots. That is obviously dangerous.

But, on the other hand, UCF kids, atleast not from what I've seen, are not invading houses or shooting people.
