If the car is in your father's name, and he lives in KENTUCKY then it does not have to be registered here.

The problem is you told the officer the car belonged to you.

Is your name the same as your dad's?

They cannot force your dad to SELL YOU THE CAR and put it in your name. LOL

Yes now you have to go explain to the DMV and see if some wierd "you're not allowed to borrow someone's car" law exists in Florida. ha ha.

MOre of an issue is your insurance. Call the company and make sure you're covered in FL. My kid attended college here when we lived in PA and I had AIG and they refused to cover the vehicle out of state. They kept giving me some bogus argument about a college student has to register a vehicle where they go to college which is ridiculous since dorms close down three times a year and it's not a LEGAL ADDRESS.

No wonder those idiots have destroyed our economy with their bailout.

I can respond to this based on the exact situation, but using a Car owned by my mother in Michigan and Me living in Nebraska. I was pulled over for speeding and also given a ticket for "No NE Registration." The officer didn't care that the car was legally registered by the owner in MI, said it had to be registered where it was being held (had Situs).

I went to court for this issue today and they dropped the no registration charge if I plead guilty to the speeding. But the judge also said the car must be registered in Nebraska regardless of were its owned. They want their money for registration and wheel tax regardless of the fact that the bank will not Title a car in a state where the owner does not live... So its a mess but at least they dropped it and I'm just hoping I don't get pulled over again. Also, I have Geico for insurance, they are completely aware of the situation and said it is perfectly OK.

I was able to register a car here that my mother owned even though she lived in Pennsylvania at the time. This was in 2007, while she was visiting Florida she got a Non-resident state ID and was then able to register the car here. With the new ID rules I'm pretty sure there is no longer such a thing as a non-resident ID, but the state must still have some way around this for car registration since there are a lot of cars down here that belong to people who live out-of-state but the car never leaves Florida.
