Just wondering how frequent power outages are around Seminole county and for how long do these last typically. I know it can vary quite a bit, but I'm just trying to get a ballpark idea. Is it more like once every few years? Every year? A few times a year? And are we talking like a few hours or days? Is it usually during the peak hurricane season? Is getting a generator highly recommended? Thanks.

Just a novice trying to get ready...

Wow I didnt even think about that. I am from NYC & planning on buying a home down there this summer. We have 2 small boys and are trying to decide which area is safest .From all my research I have found the seminole schools best so far.I guess I will watch your site to see the answers. I would think a generator is a good investment, like insurance you pay for it with the hopes of never needing to use it.

Do you mean from hurricanes? So far it hasn't been a problem for me during the t-storms. Occasionally I'll get a Brown out, if that's what it's called, where things will dim for a few seconds and then go back to normal. Maybe I've been lucky.

Yes, I usually have at least 2 per year just south of Orlando. Sometimes they can last about 30 minutes to a few hours, depends on how fast the electric company fixes the transformer. Lightning can be real bad where I live. ProTip: also buy a power strip and unplug any high value electronics you have. A power strip is no match for the electrical surges even when turned off. Unplug the powerstrip until everything looks clear, thank me later.

Power outages can vary greatly from neighborhood to neighborhood. It won't make any difference be it Orange county or Seminole For the most part we all get our power from Progress Energy. For me outages do occur regularly, say 2-3 times a year. generally they last short durations like 15 minutes but they have gone as long as 4 hours. periodically I get a quick shut down... enough to cause a reset of clocks and the computer..... an annoyance outage... maybe 2 of those a year too.

In adverse circumstances, the hurricanes of '04 they lasted for 10 days... that was the extreme and made generators very popular.

The area is suitable for small wind generators which can reduce power consumption year round... Google Helix Wind.

I have had one power outage in the past year where I live in Seminole County. It lasted about 5 and a half hours. Someone hit the pole with the transformer. Accidents happen.

I do have a generator for hurricanes. If I had gas for it during that outage, I would have used it. I missed the season finale of 24!

During the 2004 hurricane Charlie, I had power in my old house with above ground lines. My son, with his new home and underground lines, lost power for 8 days.

Those less than 24hrs ones I think I can handle, but yikes... 8-10 days!!!???? Those are the doozies. Goodness, no A/C, ice water in that kind of heat. I can just imagine my dog with eyes that say, "please end this torture, put me to sleep already well ya?"

I'm going to have to look into one of those wind generators. HOA would probably not allow it though. With a gas generator, I'd probably have trouble trying to figure out how to use it when I finally need it.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

there was a power outage today oviedo, the majority of the town was out for about 1.5-2 hours. it was terrible because it was in the middle of the day (2pm) so it got hot inside my cousins house fast. when i was driving home the traffic lights on alafaya trl were out too, supposively a car accident caused the outage, i'm not sure though.
