Just saw over in the Jax forum about a large eastern diamondback rattler being caught in St. John's county

//www.city-data.com/forum/jacks...tle-snake.html

So I guess that means they are common in the Orlando area too?

I've lived here for going on five years and have never seen one or heard of anyone being bit by one (or seeing one) in residential areas. Go traipsing through the woods in a rural area, you might find one. But in residential areas, you're more likely to run into a brown recluse spider or a mound of fire ants.

never seen or heard of someone seeing one here. And I've walked through heavily forested areas. I see regular harmless snakes everyone once in a while though.

Both Eastern Diamondbacks and Pygmy Rattlesnakes are present all over Florida. I have only ever personally seen rattlesnakes when I lived near an orange grove, and then I saw them frequently. (oranges = rats = snakes)

There are rattlesnakes all over Florida - Eastern Diamondbacks and Pygmys both.

When you walk through palmetto brush, it is wise to make as much noise as possible...

Beat me to it!

This reminds me, my idiot neighbor made me kill a harmless garter snake once - fool thought it was a pygmy rattler (really? A green one with round eyes? WTF?)

I feel bad now but the poor man was hysterical*, and the snake was already injured anyway.

*Yankee, what can you do.

Okay...well if we ever make it down there on a non-temp basis, I'll be sure me and my family won't go off wandering in the brush...

P.S. Hopefully the only ones we'll ever see will be when riding on the train around the Magic Kingdom.

Yup, got bit by one on the jobsite a few yrs ago. Dam thing ate a hole in my leg. It was nasty - my skin turned black and blue - but it was treated and although it looked bad, I got medicine and never had any problems.
