Has anyone purchased a used car from a rental car company like Hertz, Avis or Enterprise?

Good or bad experiences? Preferences on one or the other?

Thank you!

Never have but folks who have said to always have your mechanic check over car. You never know IF they have been maintaining car or IF it has been in an accident.

Bought a 2014 Altima from Hertz. Drove it to well over 200k miles with not a single issue. I was a mechanic during my college years, so I have the advantage of knowing what to look for, but quite frankly, anything with less than 50k miles should still be in great shape, regardless of how poorly maintained or driven it was.

I know people who have bought rental cars and had good luck and also know people who bought rental cars and had no end of problems. Most renters drive decently, I think, but there are a few who just completely rag out the car. Have a mechanic check out the car, and be careful.

Given what I have seen over the years in terms of upkeep at varying rental car companies I would trust Hertz and National (who I don't think has retail sites like Hertz).

I bought my vehicle from Off Lease Only in Orlando. Most of those cars are former rentals and/or monor repaired vehicles. Neither aspect scared me as rhe price was great.

Best of luck as Off Lease does zero work on cars that come in and many are void of preventative maintenance, and there because the owners couldn't afford payments or upkeep.

Ok, you have no idea what you are talking about........

I like new cars, however I did buy ONE car from OLO. It was a BMW, it had 19K miles on it and was a hard model to find new or used. The car was owned locally (guy lived about 30 miles from the dealer), it was serviced at the local BMW dealer (remember service is free for first 3 yrs/36K miles by BMW). Nothing was fixed under warranty, nothing broke (I got the report from BMW myself). Offlease bought the car at a local auction, I'd guess 90% of their inventory is straight from the auctions.

Offlease wants to churn inventory, they do not want cars sitting on the lots. Some of the stuff is used rental cars, most are simply auction cars and they have software that analyses 100 points on every car in real time BEFORE they buy it. So they certainly will fix minor things but they essentially want "ready to sell" inventory.

The founder of OLO has been a friend of mine for almost 20 years. He started with one crappy lot in a rough area then expanded to 5 dealerships. He sold to investors a couple of years ago and they are opening 4 more stores in Texas by the end of this year. In the very beginning it was called Fords Off Lease because he was buying Ford's Red Carpet Leases (24 month leased cars getting turned in). That turned into Lincolns and Jaguars at the time since Ford was covering all those leases. The name was basically a gimmick at the time but it stuck.

Here is a 2022 BMW, 1700 miles on it, clean carfax bought at auction 3 weeks ago:

Its NEVER been serviced, owner had it 4 months. First BMW service is like 7500 miles on this model so it has basically been driven 425 miles a month and traded after 4 months. Its a brand new car with 43 months, 48,300 miles of factory warranty left on it. This is the stuff they want, wash it and put it on the front line.
