I did note the date. I was responding to a post that was referring to crime since 2008.

The traffic and some drivers can certainly make the case for paying attention when your driving, as there are certainly some idiots on the road but I don't view it as any different then any other city in that regard, maybe a little bit less class than the average city but probably no difference.

I think this whole thread comes down to differences in perspectives man. I mean I am a white guy who has been on his own and scrapping by for the last 12 years. I've never hit any kind of rock bottom situation before, never been in a hospital, never been stabbed, never had my car hijacked, never been a victum of any sort of physical assault beyond some testosterone brawls here and there (mostly in my younger years).

Despite that I am low income. I've certainly come across drugs, i've been around people who drink all my life, I myself am a smoker and will drink a few beers at least once a week.

When I see people on the streets that seem like they might be sketchy I assume that they are normal people just like I am and I see the commonality. I make eye contact and give them respect, maybe even say hi. I don't treat anyone differently, not even the guy on the street begging for change or a cigarrette. I expect descent normal somewhat cool behavior out of people and I tend to get that in return. If someone starts to make me feel uncomfortable I don't over-react and I keep my cool. I don't force them to over-react or feel they have to do something about a situation. I talk to people as if they are me.

I think that some people have never had much of a taste of the street life/low income struggles and and so they lack perspective. If they see some guy of a different nationality with a blunt they assume the guy is a "thug".

All I will say is that things are not necessarily black and white (literally and figuratively). I think if you expect the worse out of someone then that's what your more likely to get. If someone makes it known to me that they are trouble and more hardcore than what I am comfortable with I'm still going to treat them the same. I'm not going to make friends with them or get involved in their lifestyle in any way, but I'm also not going to judge them. Niativity is no good either, but fear or judgement certainly does nothing to help any situation.

East Colonial is perfectly fine all the way to about 436. As someone who has lived in the area for QUITE a long time I can tell you that the people making a big deal out of it have obviously NOT lived in the rea. Contrary to belief, Fashion Sq is not a ghetto mall. There are black, white, hispanic, asian, etc that all frequent the mall. However they are not the gang-banger types at all. You want to see a scary mall? Go to West Oaks. Then come to Fashion Square and tell me it's ANYTHING like it.

You can read stats all day long but until you live in an area (not drive through it) you cannot possibly ever get a true assessment of what it's like. I have never felt scared or unsafe, and I have NEVER seen the type of "ghetto" that I see near Millennia or Metrowest.

The people who visit that mall that people think are bad could NEVER live in that area with the outrageous prices either.

Really I haven't been to West Oaks since like '98 is it that bad? I'm gonna start a thread on this topic before derailing this one.

West Oaks has definitely gotten ghetto. I won't shop there any more, and prefer to not even shop during the day at the adjacent businesses (Best Buy, PetSmart, etc.)

I've hung in orlando a few times for sure. I've been in the fashion square mall several times. It's my favorite mall next to the florida mall and I have never felt like I am among "gang bangers".

Fashion Square Mall is on East Colonial. If you felt safe there and have been many times then your answer seems pretty clear.

I don't really get your logic here though man. I mean I figured since it is near there that it would not be that bad but just because a mall doesn't have criminals in it doesn't mean much. lol. Not sure how you come to that conclusion.

Criminals and violent people don't usually conduct their business in malls.

Criminals and violent people don't usually conduct their business in malls nor do malls only consist of only people who live within a few blocks. I don't see how a malls clientelle reflects any particular complex nearby.
