My son and his wife are coming next month, from up north, and want to go to a beach on the Gulf, for the day. Since we haven't been here that long, I don't know what to recommend or the easy routes to get to one. Can anyone suggest some?

I always go to Fort DeSoto Beach when I go to the Gulf: The Official Fort DeSoto Park Home Page

It's beautiful and relatively empty so you can always find a good spot

Siesta Key in Sarasota...this is considered by many to be the best beach in all of Florida.

Thank you all. Pete, I've heard alot about this beach. Is it possible to go and come back in one day, from Orlando? Don't know the distance and traffic, etc.

Sure, my parents (nearly 70) and grandparents (both 90+) just made a day trip from Siesta Key to EPCOT in February, and they thought it was very doable. They had a great day in EPCOT in the middle of a month in Siesta Key.

We haven't done it both ways in one day, but we've done the trip between Siesta Key and Disney several times, and never run into a major traffic problem. The trip usually takes us right around 2 hours.

I have not been to some suggested above ( e.g. I have heard Siesta Key is great but never been) but of the ones I have been to, Holmes Beach / Anna Maria Island have been the best. beautiful clear water and white sand, not rough like the east side - I am from the Caribbean and so far this has been the best beach I have found (though still exploring).

Let us all know how Siesta Key was after you get back.
