There are only 2 things in life that are guaranteed, death and taxes, everything else is a crapshoot.
Extended warranties are a rip off, 50% commission to sales person selling it to you and then the small print exclusions means you're stuck anyway. And yes the cost of packing it up and sending it to the factory for service is in most cases not worth it as stated by others as the replacement can be cheaper to buy and probably has updated parts in the unit.
Lifetime warranties, ??? whose lifetime, yours, mine, the mfg or the products parts. Most salespeople tell you as long as you own it, ha ha, not true, try to get it fixed 20 years from now.
