I'm Jezer and will be doing the Pet Peeve Of The Day. Mrs Jezer says that I shouldn't be short of ideas as I am at the age now where I realise that I can't change the World. Ah well, that's life.
You might wonder how things will be with a Brit choosing the peeve, but I can assure you that many of the peeves we have here are the same as the ones you have there. I know this as I have lived and worked in the good old USA and hope to again some time.
I do apologise if I hit upon subjects that have been touched upon before, by the way.
One more thing- I'll spell things the good old fashioned English English way, hope that doesn't throw you too much!
So, on with my first peeve. Oh boy, where to start?
One thing I found that was far worse in the US than here (we're catching up though) was cold callers on the phone. That is people calling unannounced looking to sell or ask for donations- thanks satx56.
I hope that makes for a good starter, and thank you for your welcomes.
"Cold Callers"......better explain that one Jezer!! I assume you mean salespeople without referrals ?? We do not like any salespeople calling us !! Period!! Welcome Jezer!!

That's what I mean satx!
They phone you up unannounced trying to sell you something, or are often looking for donations.
I can see I'll have to check that the peeve works in translation!

OK! Well then good job! Our gov't implemented a program that was supposed to reduce these calls. But, I'm not convinced it has had a reasonable impact! But I assure you we do not want these calls!.......
Welcome, Jezer! I am so glad that Pet Peeve continues on.
By "cold callers" do you mean what we call telemarketers here (telephone sales pitches), or people who just show up at your desk or door to sell or push propaganda?
All are equally annoying. Signing up for Do Not Registry sure helped but I'm a receptionist and I hate it when I get cold callers at my desk. I usually claim that the person they want "is in a meeting" and just give them a card.
Again, thank you for assuming the peeve thread. Keep us posted on things in merry ol' England!
Jezer... my Mum always said they were called "cold callers" because you wished they would drop dead!
I'm on the do not call register here in the U.S., but charities are still able to call. Some are very persistent even when told no. I do not answer the phone anymore if I do not recognise the number. They can leave a message if it is important.
That Do Not Call Registry works great on cutting down the calls. But it doesn't work on companies you have done business with in the past & those charity calls!
I keep hoping they won't find my cell phone number!
