Can someone explain this joke to me? All these years I thought the answer was literal and self explanatory. Meaning the chicken just wanted to walk over to the other side of the road. Am I wrong?

The "joke" is that when someone asks that question, the person asked thinks it's going to be a clever and funny answer and goes along with it. Then the answer is meant to make that person look foolish for thinking there was going to be a funny punchline.

The real question here is "why are chickens out on the road in the first place?"
