Okay, I have something I would like to discuss. I think this is the place to post it because I am wanting to have a light discussion, nothing heavy. Let me explain...

I read the comics online. I usually read the old favorites, like Beetle Bailey.

Beetle Bailey « ArcaMax Publishing

The question I have is this: why in this day and age is Sarge still beating up Beetle? Why hasn't Sarge changed his ways? They could have Sarge go through anger management? I realize that isn't his character, so maybe at least the storyline could stop with the violence. I realize that this is like the Roadrunner cartoon (boy, I haven't watched that in ages!) and the Roadrunner being run over or killed or whatnot.

Still. Beetle being beat up sure sends a negative message. Or does it? Is it so far removed from reality that it doesn't matter? It just bugs me that Beetle is still being beat up.

Please, let's not get political here. Just give your opinion of why this is still part of the storyline. Or why you don't care! HAA

What do you think?

I don't go out of my way to read comics, but i'm sure Beetle Bailey has many loyal fans, and even the casual reader might like to see Beetle the way he's always been seen.

I don't want to open my paper and see the Lockhorns in marital bliss

I imagine that if the cartoonist changes Sarge to be more "politically correct" (a kinder, gentler Sarge?), he would lose many loyal fans. People like it the way it is.

Oh, good point! And I do laugh time to time if I read the Lockhorns. LoL

Ah this is true as well ! I kind of was trying to see it this way but my anti-bullying mantra was getting in the way!

Funny, we can apply our reasoning a bit skewed at times... i.e. The Lockhorns vs Beetle Baily.

I'm a Beetle Bailey fan. I had stacks of those comic books back in the 60's. I'm okay with Sarge beating on Beetle because Beetle never gets hurt.

Beetle Bailey deserves it. Well, maybe sometimes he doesn't, but it seems all in fun. Besides, he can get beat to a pulp and it's like Wile E. Coyote, we know he is not REALLY hurt.

Rainroosty and sun queen, thanks. Beetle doesn't get hurt, that is true. But I like it when he dodges Sarge. haha That reminds me, I have to go download my comic pages. LoL

I used to read Beetle Bailey and many others but haven't kept up on the comics page like I used to. Beetle was a total goof-off though. Surprised everyday wasn't "KP Duty" or clean the latrines day, or was it? If Beetle was really smart, he could have paid off one of his fellow comrades to be a look out while he caught some zzzzz's
