Good morning and a happy Tuesday to all. I’m a little squinty eyed this morning, as I was the lucky girl who received a phone call after midnight last night
so before I camp out at the coffee maker . . . Didja know?
In 1865 opium was grown in the state of Virginia and a product was distilled from it that yielded 4 percent morphine
In 1867 it was grown in Tennessee: six years later it was cultivated in Kentucky. During these years opium, marijuana and cocaine could be purchased legally over the counter from any druggist.
Things haven't changed much since then. Only now you have to get a prescription, or buy from a drug dealer, and the substances have been converted to chemicals.
Yes, I knew that. Morphine comes from the opium plant, as does heroin. I also knew that all these things were legally sold at one time. Forty years ago one could still buy paregoric with tincture of opium in it OTC (but you had to sign for it). This is a very effective treatment for diarrhea.
Know wonder they are so hospitable in the South. They grow good stuff...
