I love Halloween, it's when my creative muse shows up for an extended visit.

My oldest daughter was 7 weeks premature, and tiny. Even though she was almost 11 months old on her first Halloween she was still wearing clothes for a 3 month old. Costumes were hard to find.

Not wanting to deprive her of the fun I had to make her a costume and at the time I wasn't very crafty.

I had some clear 13 gallon trash bags, balloons and ribbon. With a little trimming and a lot of blowing, she was transformed into a bag of jelly beans. It was a big hit!

Since then, all of our costumes have been homemade. We have a lot of fun and the kids get to stretch their creative muscles.

Tell us your stories of Halloween costumes past. The good, the bad and the what the heck was I thinking.

There's a 5 year age difference in the ages of my nephews but we always managed to have a theme with their costumes. One year the youngest was a lumber jack and the oldest was a pine tree. Another time the youngest was a tube of tooth paste and the older one was the tooth brush.

That's a really cute idea! I wish my kids had been that agreeable.

My youngest daughter had her own theme, she always wanted to be a bride. One year, traditional, next year, zombie, then a clown bride, alien bride.......

She's 15 and this is her last time to go trick or treating. This year her bridal theme is a big secret. Should I be scared? Lol

Just think how much cheaper being a Halloween bride is than being a real bride. Being a real bride should be what scares you.......

My oldest daughter was married this past March. They paid for the wedding but I paid the travel and lodging for the rest of us. $2500 give or take a couple of bucks.

I have expensive kids, just one more reason we make our own Halloween costumes!

My previous last name was Baker. My then-hubby, his parents and I all dressed up in white, with chef's hats and various cooking utensils - rolling pin, fake pie, etc. People asked us what we were and we said, "we're the bakers!" they'd look at us and say, "yeh?" Very few people got it.

LOL! That was sooooo corny!

I remembered when I was 10 or 11, my older sister was prepping me up for Halloween. I told her that I wanted to be Cyndi Lauper and she kept saying as she was doing my hair that I would be Boy George! I wasn't too happy with that!

But Boy George looked good in drag! Beside that, he sang one of my favorite songs.

So, which celebrity persona won?

I was never big on Halloween, but this one party I went to one year had the most creative costumes I'd seen, besides a parade one time. This one girl had this real long red wavy hair and found this long green sequined skirt and large seashells and came as a mermaid.

Another friend of mine had on this nerdy looking outfit - big, thick, black rimmed glasses, shirt buttoned to the neck, highwater pants, pocket protector with pens, and a name tag that said, "Clark." Half way through the party, while he was dancing he began to disrobe in the middle of the room and under the nerdy outfit was a Superman costume. But let's not stop there, he figured out a way to make white Christmas lights on the S light up. AH, the "Clark" name tag was "Clark Kent."

My best friend went as Peg Bundy and she even had the walk down to a science I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off like she did. She had the leopard print stretch pants and wig. It was a winner with that walk.

The only thing I managed was a lace dress from an all white wedding I was in one year and made it into a fairy costume and fashioned fishing line to the wings to my wrists so when I moved the wings did too.

My mom used to make costumes for the City's annual parade and she did all the characters from Sesame street and they were outstanding. She did the heads using the balloon and paper mache method. Let them dry and then cut the head holes and did the fabric on them. Her cookie monster was an exact duplicate of the tv show. I know there's a photo of them around here somewhere.

One of my favorites from a parade was someone who came as a picnic table. Basically it was a board on their head on a slant with the gingham tablecloth on it and brown pants that looked like the wooden legs. Eye holes had to be somewhere but you couldn't see them. What really topped this one off is it had actual plates and mustard and ketchup squeeze bottles like from a restaurant, silverware, napkins and even these plastic ants crawling up the table cloth and across the table glued down on it. It was one of the most creative and well done costumes I'd ever seen.

A lot of the stuff from the costumes I described was bought at a Goodwill or discount dollar store if they didn't have it already.
