ARE YOU DEHYDRATED?
In a recent issue of AARP magazine, I found an interesting little blurb about dehydration and its affect on our wellbeing. I've heard and read a lot about this from other sources as well, but this particular article sums it up succinctly.
If you feel a bit out of sorts, you may be dehydrated. Drinking more water may cheer you up! Seriously, recent studies revealed that even mild dehydration can lead to altered mood, impaired memory, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, headaches and/or anxiety.
Dehydration causes changes in electrolyte balances in the blood as well as serotonin levels in the brain, which can affect memory and mood.
If you want to know how to tell whether you are dehydrated, check the color of your urine. Study author Lawrence Armstrong, Ph.D. says, "[A]nything darker than a pale, straw hue means you need to drink more."
This is important stuff, kids, so take heed!
