Hi, kids! Scroll on down for Today's Tip.

HOW TO CLEAN MUSHROOMS

Are you aware that you should not wash mushrooms? It's true! Often, when we bring mushrooms home from the supermarket they have bits or clumps of dirt on them. However, the medium in which commercially grown shrooms are grown is sterile, so it is not harmful to you.

Mushrooms are very porous and soak up water if you wash them, adversely affecting their taste and texture. If your shrooms need to be cleaned, try one of these two methods: (1) dampen a paper towel and gently rub the dirt off the mushrooms; or (2) use a very soft-bristled mushroom brush to brush away dirt.

You may want to also cut off the end of the stem, which may be a bit dried out, tough or discolored.

Don't peel mushrooms, as much of the flavor is in the outermost layers.

Remember - a bit of growing medium is harmless, and it's not at all necessary to run water over your mushrooms. They'll taste better if you just wipe or brush off the dirt, even if you leave a little smudge or two behind.

Oh wow! I did not know this, Pam. I've always washed the mushrooms.

This is great to know. I will not wash them again.

I knew it wasn't good to wash them as they soak up the water. But, I thought they were all grown in dark, dank caves in bat guano Thanks for telling us they're commercially grown in sterile medium. Nice to know I feel better now! Thanks Pam!

I’m sorry but anything that is sold in the produce department that is not already packaged,,,,,,,,,,, gets washed! Just stand around and watch others who are picking their way around different items there,,,, some are coughing, rubbing their nose, perspiring all over the items or simply dropped the item on the floor and put it back into the display. I’m washing everything period.

Hmm.. Well I only eat mushrooms with eggs.. fried.. No I don't get fried on mushrooms, I fry the mushrooms with the eggs... So that should kill any bacteria.
