CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (CNN) -- Bystanders are credited with helping rescue four people from a small plane that crashed into a shopping center parking lot in Chattanooga while trying to land at a nearby airport.

The Beechcraft King Air twin-engine turboprop was preparing to land at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport when it crashed around 8 p.m. Wednesday, about 2,000 feet short of the runway, The Associated Press reported authorities as saying.

Robin Flores, a local lawyer, was eating dinner with his wife at a nearby restaurant when he witnessed the crash in the Brainerd Village Shopping Center. The couple were among several witnesses who tried to help rescue the injured.

"We first heard a noise, a loud thud. And I looked out the window and saw a vehicle that was spinning and a big item that was coming to a stop," Flores told CNN. "It didn't dawn on me it was an airplane at first. I just thought it was a car wreck. I took a double take and said to myself it's an airplane."
