Today in History:

1868 - 14th Amendment ratified, grants citizenship to ex-slaves
1900 - Hamburger created by Louis Lassing in Connecticut
1914 - World War I began when Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
1926 - U.S. and Panamanian pact about safeguard of Panama Canal

Wow. He did that before the war was over. I can just imagine how happy coffee drinkers were about that. There are times when only a cup of coffee will do. Know what I mean?

What’s do you miss about days gone by? The simpler times where there were no cellphones and computers.. People seemed to care more about one another back then and mingled more..now everyone seems more into themselves.

or an organization? I have few neighbors & those I have don't have yard sales. I some times go to the library's book sale.

What’s do you miss about days gone by? Sense of innocence... People seemed more genuinely connected, more caring...
and in my experience, had a better work ethic.

Busy day. I will spend the day with my younger grand daughter as my daughter has to work at the rehab center. And then tonight I'll be baking for my older daughter's baby shower on Sunday. Have a good day, all!

Today's Questions:

What’s the one thing you love most about where you live?
Probably the fact that it is Alaska. When I am elsewhere and people find out I am from Alaska they seem to get friendlier.

What’s your least favorite thing about where you live?
The cost of living including the cost, in both money and time, to get anywhere else.

Bonus Questions:
Now from the Valley of the Sun . . .

Do you go to yard, garage or any other sales that are held by your neighbors
or an organization?
I have never held a yard sale and have very little use for ones held by others.

If you do, have you ever seen an item that you felt was interesting or odd?

Have you ever bought an item that turned out to be worth a lot more than what

It was not at a yard sale but I once bought a $10 roll of all silver fifty cent pieces and sold them the next day for $200. I was working at the student rec center at college when some 12 year old kid wanted to exchange the roll of fifty cent pieces for a roll of quarters so he could play the video games. When I checked to make sure there were actually fifty cent peices in the roll I was amazed to find they were all early 1960's all silver. This was in the late 70's when the Hunt Brothers were trying to corner the silver market and drove up the price. People trying to get in on the act were going town to town advertising they were buying silver coins at 20 times their face value. Shortly after I took in the fifty cent pieces, I saw an ad in the paper advertising just that. I scraped up $10 in a hurry and bought the roll of coins. A couple hours after I sold them for a tidy profit this lady stopped by the rec center and asked if her son had brought the roll of fifty cent pieces the day before. She then described the very kid I had seen. She said she wanted to buy back the roll of coins. I did not have the heart to tell her the smile on my face was from the $200 I had just made off of the coins. So I just told her they had already been deposited. with the rest of the days money.

I miss the campouts my family went on when I was growing up. We had the best meals when camping. Years later we would look back at thes trips and really get to laughing over two things that usually happened when camping. As soon as we set up the tent it would rain and no matter how hard the wind was blowing as soon as we sat down by the campfire the wind would shift and blow smoke towards us.

Good morning all, from a dry, sunny England.

Now then, what I miss most about days gone by mmmm. I miss the sense of optimism that people had when I was a kid in the 60s. England was full of great music, fashion, and hope for the future. Young people had it all, and it seemed things would just get better. Well, that has turned to ashes.

What I love about where I live, is I am not far from open countryside, and the hills and farms on the pennines. That is one of the good things about England. The so called 'green belt' separates towns from each other, so it doesn't become urban sprawl.

What I don't like is the decline of town centres. They used to be full of life, with plenty of shops. Now, slowly but surely, they are in decline. Supermarket, and out of town shopping malls have sucked the life out of them. The downturn we are suffering now, being the final nail in the coffin. In my town centre now, it is full of big bars, betting shops every 50 yards for people to gamble on anything from horses to football. Almost all the family run businesses are gone.

This day in 1914 was the start of WW1 huh? What an awful disaster that was. If I remember right, about 50,000 young Englishmen died in ONE day at the Battle of the Somme. That war was a terrible, unnecessary mess.

Have a nice day everyone.

Friendly people.

What’s your least favorite thing about where you live?
Summer heat. But ask me again in January.

Seldom go to garage sales but stopped by one on impulse a couple of months ago.

If you do, have you ever seen an item that you felt was interesting or odd?
Same old junk. It's kind of a universal junk exchange for the most part.

Have you ever bought an item that turned out to be worth a lot more than what you paid for it?
Well, there was that undiscovered Rembrandt, but other than that.

Just for Fun

What’s do you miss about days gone by?
The daily use and application of common sense. Still around, but getting more rare it seems.

Listen up. This is another way of saying socialism - it doesn't work.

Or in my words: Money for goods and services doesn't happen by magic, it has to be earned and by everyone.

N/A

I miss the days when rock 'n' roll was fun, radio was live and local, DJ's had individual personalities, and everybody listened to the same songs.
