I don't know where to put this so I am going to put it here:

Often I would hear people online and offline describe screen based media such as: TV, computers, video games, and smartphones as "time wasters" or "time killers" why is that? I think that these devices are absolutely fascinating and as a sci fi fan and a fan of technology I am absolutely amazed by screen based devices. Why do we claim that these types of activities are time wasters or time killers when other activities probably more stationary are given a free pass?

They can be time wasters if someone allows themselves to get distracted from taking care of things in life like chores, studying, work, etc. That's not to say we shouldn't have these things. It all comes down to discipline just like other things in life.

I view the internet as a huge library of information. One can learn much online. It can be said these things take away time from real conversations and friendships, getting out into the real world, kids playing on the computer in their free time rather than outside playing as in the old days. I think more attention has been given to this due to people becoming overweight. People can become addicted to games and internet social sites. Just one more game and I'll go do the chores I need to do. How many times a day do some check Facebook? Or change their current status. For kids and kid like adults it can become obsessive and a time waster.

Why do we say that: TV, Computers, The Internet, Video games and Smartphones are "time wasters"?
Spoiler
Because I'm your dad and I said so.
